OVP HEALTH, based in Huntington, WV, opens the first phase of its new 80-
bed inpatient drug and alcohol treatment center in Massillon today.
The facility, located inside the former Affinity Hospital—now Massillon Community Health—will
operate 24 hours a day, year-round. The OVP HEALTH Recovery Center includes inpatient beds for men
and women and includes acute detox beds for patients experiencing severe withdrawal with round-the-clock
nursing care, counseling services, activities and food service.
Care will be provided by physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and counselors, with individualized
treatment plans that may include medication-assisted treatment or 12-step, abstinence-based approaches.
A patient’s length of stay in an OVP HEALTH Recovery Center is based on their individual treatment
plan.
“Communities continue to suffer from a shortage of inpatient treatment beds for people with substance
use disorder,” said Jonathan Hess, MD, Medical Director of OVP HEALTH Recovery Center and a
board-certified addiction medicine specialist. “We are eager to help in this area using our experience and
expertise in caring for those seeking addiction care. This center offers a safe, secure environment where
patients can be medically stabilized and begin meaningful individual and group counseling.”
The Center in Massillon marks the second such location operated by OVP HEALTH, which has operated
a recovery center in South Point, Ohio, since 2020 that now includes more than 90 beds and a daily
patient census near capacity.
“We have seen tremendous patient success at our facility in South Point, Ohio, and this opportunity in
Massillon enables OVP HEALTH to provide life-saving substance use disorder treatment to another
community in need,” said Stacey Shy, OVP HEALTH Chief Executive Office. “We are already
coordinating our efforts with local referral partners and agencies who will be important to helping us give
patients the best chance for long-term recovery.”
Patients may be admitted to the OVP HEALTH Recovery Center by self-referral, but also by referral
from local law enforcement agencies, court systems, hospital emergency and social work departments,
primary care providers, and other agencies that provide substance use disorder treatment or health care
services. OVP HEALTH staff also work closely with hospital and social workers to transition complex
medical patients to treatment.
